The Honolulu Fire Department rescued two female visitors in their teens at 11:59 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19 from the Koko Head Crater Trail in Hawaii Kai, according to a news release.

A 911 call came in at about 11:35 a.m. to which HFD responded with five units, arriving at the scene at 11:45 a.m. Rescue personnel ascended the trail to assist the two teens who became ill while hiking and weren’t able to descend on their own.

After a medical assessment and providing basic support, the hikers were transported via Air 1 to a nearby landing zone. The rest of the hiking group of about 15 people was escorted to the trailhead on foot.

Dehydration can lead to heat exhaustion and possibly progress to heat stroke. HFD provides the following hiking tips to those venturing outside:

  • Bring plenty of water, stay hydrated and prepare for the unexpected
  • Know your physical capabilities and limitations and select trails to enjoy safely
  • Stay on the trail to avoid getting lost or injured
