HONOLULU — Registration for a variety of Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation fall programs begins this month and the new Parks and Recreation Online System will make the process easier and faster for the public.

What You Need To Know

  • The DPR’s new online system will make registering and paying for the city parks program easier and faster; walk-in registration will still be available

  • Online and walk-in registration for fall opens this month on different days; see the schedule below

  • DPR encourages the public to create an account ahead of time for a smoother process since they expect high demand on registration day

  • Create an account either on the PROS website (instructions at top right) or the hnl.info website

The roll-out of PROS is a collaborative effort between the DPR and the Department of Information Technology. It’s just in time for folks to register for activities and pay for those that require a fee via the PROS website. Walk-in registration will still be available for those without computer/internet access.

The registration schedule is organized by geographic park districts:

  • District I: Hawaii Kai to McCully
  • District II: Makiki to Aiea
  • Online registration begins at 4 p.m. Aug. 22
  • Walk-in registration: 4-7 p.m. Aug. 22 and 2-5 p.m. Aug. 23
  • District III: Waipahu to Waianae
  • District IV: Waialua to Waimanalo
  • District V: Pearl City, Mililani to Wahiawa
  • Online registration begins at 4 p.m. Aug. 24
  • Walk-in registration: 4-7 p.m. Aug. 24 and 2-5 p.m. Aug. 25

Walk-in registrants can pay by cash or check. Visa and Mastercard credit/debit cards are accepted for online payment.

The fall 2022 program activities include archery, basketball, book/magazine clubs, crafts, chair exercise, dance (ballet, hula, etc.), dodgeball, gymnastics, homework assistance, keiki art, learn to swim, stand-up paddle boarding/surfing, tai chi, ukulele and Zumba.

The city initially launched PROS in the summer of 2020 as a reservation system for the Koko Head Shooting Complex, then quickly developed to include registration for free park programs, including the city’s summer fun programs. The system was then used for the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve to accommodate online payment.

“When we began researching the in-house developed PROS software, we envisioned a ‘one-stop-shop’ kind of service for all your park needs, such as registration and permitting,” said DIT Director Mark Wong, in a release. “The pandemic refocused our efforts on managing access to popular park facilities and programs at a time when crowd size was a significant concern. Now we are thrilled this software can continue to streamline operations and public interaction with the city, and are looking forward to next summer when we plan to offer Summer Fun registration primarily online.”

When registration begins, demand will likely be high, according to DPR, so those interested are encouraged to set up an account beforehand. Folks can create an account on either the PROS website or on the hnl.info website (click on “HNL Info Account” on the bottom left). The PROS website has instructions at the top right under “Frequently Asked Questions.”

Registration for Honolulu Botanical Garden activities will be announced in mid-August via the HBG and DPR social media accounts and will differ from the timetable above.
