The National Weather Service has upgraded the Fire Weather Watch for Kauai County’s leeward areas to a Red Flag Warning to take effect from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. The warning may be extended, dropped or modified as conditions develop, according to a Kauai County news release.
According to the NWS, a Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will occur shortly, but does not predict new fire starts. Dry fuels, strong and gusty trade winds and low relative humidity levels could produce “extreme fire behavior” Sunday, especially in the afternoon hours.
In addition, NWS has issued a High Wind Advisory for the entire island to go into effect for the same day and time. According to the NWS, northeast to east winds 15 to 30 mph with localized gusts to 50 mph may be generated. Winds of this magnitude can tear off shingles, knock down tree branches, blow away tents and awnings, and make it difficult for drivers to steer high-profile vehicles.
The National Weather Service has issued a fire weather watch for Kauai County’s leeward areas that go into effect Sunday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. This means that the conditions for “extreme fire behavior” — a combination of dry fuels, strong and gusty trade winds, and low relative humidity — are forecast to occur, especially during the afternoon hours, according to the NWS.
Outdoor burning is not recommended since any fires that develop are likely to spread rapidly. The public is advised to listen for later forecasts and possible red flag warnings.
