HONOLULU — The City and County of Honolulu reminds homeowners who own and occupy their property as the principal home to file a claim for a home exemption to reduce their real property assessments and taxes for the tax year starting July 1, 2023. Claims must be filed by the Sept. 30, 2022, deadline.
Qualifying homeowners under the age of 65 can receive an exemption of $100,000. Those 65 of years and older can receive an exemption of $140,000. Individuals filing for an exemption must provide verification of age, such as a copy of a driver’s license or birth certificate.
Individuals with Hansen’s Disease, totally disabled veterans and property owners who are deaf, blind or fully disabled may also apply for an exemption or other tax relief program. The filing deadline is also Sept. 30, 2022 and will also go into effect in the tax year 2023-2024.
Any change in ownership or use, such as in the sale or rental of a property, will void the exemption and must be reported to the City Real Property Assessment Division within 30 days of transaction. The city reminds homeowners that failure to do so will subject the claimant to back taxes and a penalty for every year that the change remains unreported.
Visit the Department of Budget and Fiscal Services’ Real Property Assessment Division website to file a home exemption claim online and to download a claim form. The site also has additional exemption and real property assessment information.
