LIHUE, Hawaii — Kauai’s Office of Economic Development invites residents and visitors to complete a survey to assess their transportation preferences as part of the county’s Energy Transitions Initiative Partnership Project.

What You Need To Know

  • Kauai’s OED is looking for ways to incorporate emerging transportation technology into the island’s transportation system, as well as understand why people select a particular mode of travel and what would make them change

  • Residents and visitors are encouraged to take part in the survey available at getaroundkauai.com or Kauai Ground Transportation Survey 2022

  • The survey takes five to seven minutes and participants may remain anonymous if preferred

  • The survey will be available online until Oct. 31, 2022

The County of Kauai is receiving help in studying ways to improve the island’s transportation system through incorporating emerging transportation technology. Through the survey, they can better understand why people select particular modes of transportation and what would make them change if a different option was made available. The results will provide important information for the ETIPP transportation studies.

The public can take the survey at getaroundkauai.com or via Kauai Ground Transportation Survey 2022.

“As Kauai’s population grows and tourism continues to increase, traffic congestion will get worse,” said OED Director Nalani Brun in a release. “Providing an affordable, sustainable and convenient transportation system will make traveling around Kauai less burdensome and boost local business revenues.”

National Renewable Energy Lab consultants, the OED and local stakeholders have been collaborating throughout the project to explore what alternative transportation modes may work well in different areas of the island.

“The intent of the survey and the project research is not to find ways to get rid of cars altogether, but to find avenues where cars can be replaced by more sustainable travel alternatives where it makes sense,” added Brun.

The survey takes about five to seven minutes to complete and will be available online until Oct. 31, 2022. Survey participants can choose to be anonymous. Interested individuals can also enter a drawing for the chance to win a gift box valued at $100 from Alakoko Store on Kauai.

Anyone with questions about the survey can contact Christina Kaser at ckaser@kauai.gov.
