The No. 4 Hawaii men’s volleyball team took care of business during its four-match North Carolina interlude.
Coach Charlie Wade turned his reserves loose in a four-set win over first-year program Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C., on Saturday afternoon, then unleashed his big dogs against Queens in Charlotte that night to produce another four-set win.
The Rainbow Warriors (13-1) drove an hour in between. The last time the program played two matches in one day was Feb. 4, 2022, against Fairleigh Dickinson and Queens at the First Point Collegiate Challenge in Austin, Texas.
UH swept Belmont Abbey in Belmont, N.C., on Thursday and produced a sweep against Queens on Friday.
The Division II Catawba Indians (6-8) offered Wade a chance to get some of his lesser-experienced players some court time, including third-string setter Victor Lowe, who tallied 45 assists and two aces in the 25-19, 25-11, 25-27, 25-19 victory. Freshman opposite Kainoa Wade put down a season-high 18 kills on 42 swings (.286) with nine digs while first-year hitter Finn Kearney recorded a personal-best 14 on 28 attempts (.393) with eight digs.
Senior hitter Clay Wieter added 14 kills on .444 effiency plus eight digs.
Starting pin hitters Kristian Titriyski, Adriene Roure and Louis Sakanoko provided the requisite firepower against Queens on Saturday night, although the Royals (9-7) made a temporary stand in the third to prevent the sweep in the 25-20, 25-20, 22-25, 25-20 decision. UH hit .426 with starting setter Tread Rosenthal back at the controls.
Titriyski had 18 kills, Sakanoko 15 and Roure 11. Those three combined for five of the team’s seven service aces.
Libero ‘Eleu Choy popped up a season-high 11 digs in the trip-capper.
Competition jumps considerably when the Rainbow Warriors return home. UH opens Big West Conference play on Friday and Sunday against No. 2 UC Irvine (10-2), which just suffered back-to-back losses to two-time defending national champion UCLA.
