Despite widespread wildfire destruction in northwest areas of Los Angeles, all Big West men’s and women’s basketball games scheduled for Thursday were set to proceed as of Wednesday night, BWC Commissioner Dan Butterly told Spectrum News.

That includes Hawaii's men's game at UC Riverside set for 5 p.m. Hawaii time. Riverside is east of Los Angeles.

Multiple distinct wildfires were still out of control entering Thursday morning, with reports of thousands of structures damaged or destroyed and at least five people dead.

The Southern California-centric Big West has a men’s game set to take place at Cal State Northridge, several miles north of the fires, and women’s games set for the campuses of UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton, to the southeast.

“We are a full go. I have not been informed by any member institution of any imminent threat or concern,” Butterly said in a message.

UH arrived in Los Angeles late Tuesday, after fires had sprung up amid high winds. UH coach Eran Ganot told Spectrum News in a message on Wednesday that the team’s flight experienced turbulence just as it was approaching Southern California.

“Pilot did a great job on landing,” Ganot said.

He did not mention any other issues with preparation leading up to the game for the 9-5 (1-2 Big West) Rainbow Warriors. The UH women host UC Riverside at the Stan Sheriff Center at 7 p.m. Thursday.
