HONOLULU — Bring on UCLA.
The Hawaii women’s basketball team found itself in an offensively starved game for the second straight day but again rallied from a halftime deficit and beat Tennessee-Martin, 47-39, on Saturday to set up a de facto championship against the No. 1 Bruins in the American Savings Bank Rainbow Wahine Showdown on Sunday afternoon.
Tipoff against UCLA (7-0) is 2:30 p.m., following the noon game between UTM and Fresno State. The Bruins routed FSU 97-41 in Saturday's first game; they beat tournament foes by an average margin of 58 points over the last two days.
UH (5-1) has its best six-game start since 1997, when it won 23 of its first 24 games and made the NCAA as an at-large team under Vince Goo.
Point guard Lily Wahinekapu had 10 points and 11 rebounds, center Ritorya Tamilo added nine points and 10 boards. Guard Daejah Phillips scored all eight of her points after halftime to help UH rally from a seven-point halftime hole.
For the second straight day, the Wahine used fullcourt pressure to help turn around a slow start. The Skyhawks (1-6) did not react well and were held to 3-for-23 shooting in the second half.
UH won the third quarter decisively, 22-4, to turn its halftime deficit into an 11-point lead.
Phillips threw in a tough bank shot off the glass to beat the shot clock for a 43-32 lead with six minutes left.
UH opened up by shooting even more poorly than in Friday’s 50-47 win over Fresno State. It trailed 24-17 at halftime after UTM won the second quarter 15-6.
The Wahine opened the second half with an 11-0 run to recapture the lead. UTM didn’t score its first basket of the third quarter for nearly six minutes.
Skyhawks coach Kevin McMillan was assessed a technical foul for complaining about calls Phillips converted both tech free throws. Tamilo followed with a layup on a give from Phillips for a nine-point lead.
Anaya Brown led the Skyhawks (1-6) with 11 points and three steals. She scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to get her team within seven, but UTM got no closer.
