HONOLULU โ Setter Kate Lang and libero Tayli Ikenaga went out victorious at home to cap four-year Hawaii womenโs volleyball careers as the Rainbow Wahine swept visiting UC San Diego on Saturday night.
A season-high Stan Sheriff Center crowd of 7,109 (8,229 tickets issued) witnessed UH play one of its best matches of the season in its home finale, hitting .340 to earn a swift 25-16, 25-13, 25-19 victory.
Afterward, Lang and Ikenaga were traditionally honored with senior tunnel walks.
UH (18-8, 12-4 Big West) remained tied with Cal Poly and moved a half-game ahead of idle UC Davis atop the conference standings with two matches to play. The Wahine play at Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine next week heading into the six-team Big West championships in Irvine, Calif.
Lang, a native of Keller, Texas, stuck it out under coach Robyn Ah Mow for five total seasons, including a 2020 campaign lost to the COVID-19 pandemic. She dealt 36 assists to move into third on the Wahine career chart, passing her head coach.
Ikenaga, a Moanalua alumna from Salt Lake, dug 17 balls and added four assists in her last home match. She ranks sixth on the UH career digs list.
Junior hitter Caylen Alexander put down 14 kills and Stella Adeyemi added 12. Tali Hakas had nine kills, 10 digs and six blocks.
The UH block was at its best all season as the Wahine outdid the Tritons 13-8, contributing to a .109 hitting percentage for the visitors.
UCSD (16-11, 10-6) dropped into a three-way tie for fourth place. Ava McInnes led UCSD with 10 kills on 28 swings.
