WAIPAHU, Hawaii — Throughout the Big West women’s soccer regular season, Hawaii was able to conjure comebacks and winning formulas in tight games.

Neither happened in the Big West tournament semifinals at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium on Thursday night, as Cal State Bakersfield thumped UH, 3-0, to end a special Rainbow Wahine season.

Soggy conditions seemed to play into the rugged hands of Cal State Bakersfield, the No. 5 seed that completed a second straight upset to gain its first championship game. CSUB knocked off fourth-seeded UC Irvine, the three-time defending tournament champion, on the road on Sunday.

UH (12-8-1) registered its most wins and the first regular-season title in 13 full seasons under coach Michele Nagamine, but it ended on a sour note with the team's first shutout loss at home since Aug. 29 against Air Force, the fifth game of the season.

In the 26th minute, UH was called for a foul near the edge of its box that, upon video review, was deemed worthy of a Roadrunners penalty kick. Anela Nigito converted the shot and CSUB (8-10-4) carried a 1-0 lead into intermission.

UH came back to win five times this year —  four in the second half — but the Roadrunners’ Cynthia Ramirez tacked on a chip-shot counterattack score over BWC Goalkeeper of the Year Kennedy Justin in the 63rd minute and got a back-post header by Megan Ormson in the 66th on a Paige Rodriguez corner kick.

UH dropped to 0-3 in Big West tournament games (2019, 2023).

It was the first time since 2004 in the WAC that UH hosted a conference tournament. The Wahine went one-and-done then, too.

In the first semifinal Thursday, No. 3 UC Santa Barbara defeated No. 2 UC Davis, 3-2, on a penalty kick awarded inside the final minute of double overtime.

CSUB and UCSB will meet at 11 a.m. Sunday for the tournament championship and automatic NCAA Tournament berth.
