Four players with Hawaii ties were selected to the USA men’s volleyball 12-man roster for this summer’s Paris Olympics, it was announced Friday.
Veterans Micah Christenson and Erik Shoji were selected to their third Olympics while Micah Ma‘a and Taylor Averill were tabbed for their Olympic debuts.
Christenson, a Kamehameha graduate and USC alumnus from Honolulu, and Ma‘a, a Punahou and UCLA alum from Kaneohe, are the team’s two setters.
Shoji, a Punahou and Stanford alum and the son of former Hawaii women's volleyball coach Dave Shoji, is the team’s lone libero. Christenson and Shoji won a bronze medal at the 2016 Games.
Averill, of San Jose, Calif., was a standout middle at Hawaii from 2012 to 2015.
In a first, Long Beach State alum Kyle Ensing was named the official top alternate in the event a player cannot participate.
UCLA's John Speraw is the team's head coach coming off back-to-back NCAA men's championships.
The U.S. is ranked No. 2 in the world. The Olympic competition schedule will be revealed after June 30 upon the completion of the 2024 Volleyball Nations League Final Round. The Olympic Games will run July 26 to Aug. 11.
