Hawaii men’s basketball associate head coach John Montgomery will join Chris Acker’s new staff at Long Beach State, sources confirmed to Spectrum News.
Montgomery, who was the last remaining staff member from UH coach Eran Ganot’s first season in 2015-16, oversaw the team’s defense and post players.
Spectrum News reached out to Montgomery. Acker was reached via phone and declined comment.
Ganot told Spectrum News in a message Tuesday night, "John has been with us from Day 1 and obviously we have been through a lot together. We all wish him and his great family the best of luck moving forward and appreciate all he has done for us."
The Field of 68's Jeff Goodman laid out more of Acker's staff on Tuesday morning.
Montgomery and Acker were assistants together under Ganot for his first two seasons in Manoa, 2015-16 and 2016-17. Montgomery, an ex-assistant at Cal and former director of operations at San Francisco, joined UH just before the 2015-16 season as a replacement on staff for Norm Parrish.
As other Ganot staff members came and went over the last nine years, Montgomery was the constant. When Chris Gerlufsen left for San Francisco in 2021, Montgomery was elevated from assistant to associate head coach and served in that capacity the last three years.
Acker was named LBSU’s new coach on April 2 and introduced April 5. Acker, Montgomery and LBSU will appear on the UH schedule as a Big West opponent at least twice a season – including once a year at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Montgomery is the son of legendary West Coast college basketball coach Mike Montgomery.
