Welcome to the Big West postseason party, Tread Rosenthal.
The Hawaii freshman setter was one of four at his position to be named to the All-Big West men’s volleyball first team on Wednesday. An unprecedented two-thirds of the BWC's six teams placed a setter on the team. The previous high was three setters in 2020.
UH middle Guilherme Voss was named to the first team for the third straight year. Freshman hitter Louis Sakanoko was an honorable mention. Rosenthal and Sakanoko were named to the BWC All-Freshman team.
Cal State Northridge’s Donovan Constable, Long Beach State’s Aidan Knipe and former UH setter/libero Brett Sheward of UC Irvine were the other setters named to the first team.
The 6-foot-8 Rosenthal, a U.S. junior national team player who reclassified to graduate early from Mira Costa (Calif.) High and enroll at UH as a 17-year-old, was a six-time Big West Freshman of the Week. He was third in the league in assists per set (10.05) behind Sheward and Knipe, and fourth in aces per set (0.41).
Voss, of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was a steady force at the net – and often acted as a decoy this year. He posted 1.83 kills and nearly a block per set and hit .532.
Sakanoko, of Paris, France, tied for the league lead in aces per set at 0.44 along with his countryman at UC Irvine, Hilir Henno. He led UH in kills per set (3.06) in Big West matches once Spyros Chakas went down for the year with a knee injury and was named BWC Freshman of the Week four times.
UH (22-6) is the No. 3 seed in this week’s Big West championships at the Stan Sheriff Center. Charlie Wade’s Rainbow Warriors, the winners of the tournament in 2023, 2022 and 2019, face No. 6 UC Santa Barbara (9-17) at 7 p.m., following a 4:30 matchup between No. 4 UC San Diego and No. 5 CSUN.
It was the first time that UH had a non-winning record in the Big West (5-5) since men’s volleyball became a sponsored sport of the conference in 2018 (not including the COVID-canceled 2020 campaign).
UH’s two first-team players were its fewest in the Big West era.
BWC signature awards like player, coach and freshman of the year will be announced next week.
