Some time off did a body good for Spyros Chakas.
In a retro Rainbows uniform and in front of a raucous white-out crowd of nearly 9,000, a rested Chakas submitted one of the greatest offensive performances in Hawaii men’s volleyball program history in a 27-25, 25-7, 25-20 sweep of No. 5 Stanford on Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The senior All-American from Greece put down 23 kills on 30 swings with just one error.
He sat out two matches against Tusculum last week at coach Charlie Wade’s suggestion to allow some of the program’s up-and-comers a chance to prove themselves, while also easing Chakas’ wear and tear about one third of the way into the season.
Chakas had 15 kills in Wednesday’s four-set win over the Cardinal to put him at 38 for the week.
“I feel 100%. I took my time to rest. We had a long road trip in Indiana, and we came back, body was a little beat up,” Chakas told the Spectrum Sports corner crew.
“Communicating with (the training staff) was great, got some rest last week … and was fired up for (this).”
UH (10-1) hit a season-best .594, weighted strongly by Chakas’ .733 performance and directed by setter Tread Rosenthal’s 33 assists.
Alaka‘i Todd added nine kills on 15 error-free swings.
Wade said he would continue to pace his go-to players like Chakas when possible. He also experimented with some so-called load management in 2023.
“He’s a veteran guy and really professional in everything he does,” Wade said of Chakas. “We talked about it and of course he wants to be out there every night, but you look at it and it’s not an endless amount of energy and there’s only so many jumps in a year, really. So we’ll continue to do that kind of stuff and take advantage.”
The ‘Bows hit .706 in the decisive second set, with long service runs by Todd and Rosenthal, and nearly matched it in the third at .696. UH committed only three attack errors for the match.
“We were good in all phases,” Wade told Spectrum Sports’ Scott Robbs. “The service game was there. Offensively we were really good. I think we ended with three errors total, and all three of them were kind of bad sets.”
Wade had praise for the freshman Rosenthal and the crowd of 8,930 (9,226 tickets issued), too.
“You gotta love the setter we got,” he said. “He’s out there battling, learning, getting better, getting better, and to come out here and run offense like that tonight against a really good team, a veteran team, pretty impressive. A lot of fun, and stoked to have the crowd out here tonight. They were awesome. Really appreciate everybody coming out.”
After Stanford's Kevin Lamp evened Set 1 at 25-all, UH took it on a Cardinal service error followed by a Chakas kill.
Chakas put down 10 kills in Set 3.
Stanford (7-3) was again without its top hitter Will Rottman. It was led by Alex Rottman, who put down 10 kills.
UH is off next week before hosting Missouri S&T on Feb. 22 and 23.
