Consider the Hawaii men’s volleyball team’s lone nonconference road trip a success.

Coach Charlie Wade said that only a sweep of UH’s three-match swing through the state of Indiana would be satisfactory for the No. 4 Rainbow Warriors. UH finished it off Sunday night with a 25-23, 23-25, 25-21, 25-19 victory over Ball State in Muncie, Ind.

Spyros Chakas put down 14 kills, Alaka‘i Todd 12 and Chaz Galloway 10, while middle Guilherme Voss was at his most efficient with nine kills on 10 error-free swings.

Voss, a first-team All-American last season, also added his first two solo blocks of the year and was in on four block assists.

The senior from Brazil has only one double-digit kill match so far this year, against Loyola Chicago on Jan. 5, but he and freshman setter Tread Rosenthal have continued to work on their connection.

“It’s a priority for sure,” Wade said in a post-match interview with Hawaii media on Sunday. “He’s got what we call a big window. You can set him in a lot of different areas and it doesn’t have to be perfect every time. It’s certainly a priority for us to get him the ball as often as possible and probably could’ve gotten the ball to him a little bit more, but certainly was effective when we did.”

UH (6-1) launched nine service aces against the No. 15 Cardinals (7-5), including six in the first set.

The last time UH visited Muncie, BSU defeated UH there in consecutive matches, but the ‘Bows went on to defeat the Cardinals in the NCAA Tournament semifinals on the way to the 2022 national championship.

The Rainbow Warriors don’t play another road match until the start of Big West play at Long Beach State on March 15.

UH hosts Tusculum (Tenn.) on Friday and Sunday. The Pioneers are 1-6.
