A disappointing outcome to start the week’s road trip did not prevent the Hawaii women’s volleyball team from playing with confidence in their next outing.
UH bounced back from Friday night’s five-set loss against Big West leader UC Santa Barbara by dispatching another contender, Cal Poly, 25-18, 22-25, 25-21, 25-16 at the Mott Athletics Center on Saturday.
The Rainbow Wahine (13-6, 6-2 BWC) got 16 kills from Amber Igiede and 12 apiece from Paula Guersching and Caylen Alexander to remain in a second-place tie with Long Beach State.
Setter Kate Lang had 44 assists and eight digs as the Wahine hit .194 as a team to Cal Poly’s .088.
UH hitter Kendra Ham, a Cal Poly transfer, did not play after struggling on Friday. Instead, coach Robyn Ah Mow rolled with Guersching, Riley Wagoner and Alexander at the pins, and started Tayli Ikenaga at libero.
Alexander responded from some recent performances in recent matches with a double-double with 10 digs. Alexander, Lang and Ikenaga had two aces.
Cal Poly’s top offensive option, Lizzy Markovska, put down 15 kills but committed 10 errors on 52 swings (.096).
The Mustangs hit minus-.281 in the decisive fourth set.
UH finishes its three-match road trip at UC Davis (10-8, 5-3) on Tuesday.
