The Hawaii soccer team failed to come away with any points in the Big West standings with a 3-2 loss at UC Davis on Sunday, but remained in position to contend for a conference tournament berth with a split of its last two-game road trip of the season.

UH (4-5-3, 3-3-1 Big West) dropped into a tie for second place after its second-half rally at the Aggies’ field fell short. The Rainbow Wahine trailed 2-0, then 3-1, but drew within a goal thanks to Mia Foster’s penalty kick score in the 55th minute.

UCD (6-5-2, 2-1-2) succeeded in bleeding clock the rest of the way and the Wahine ran out of time.

Brynn Mitchell scored UH’s first goal of the game in the 51st minute, the fourth of the season for the Saint Mary’s transfer. She then drew the foul in the box that set up Foster’s third score of the year in the 55th, a perfectly placed shot to the middle-left of the net.

The Wahine have a bye week this week then play their last homestand of the year against UC Santa Barbara (3-5-7, 1-3-2) on Oct. 19 and Cal Poly (5-5-3, 3-1-1) on Oct. 22.

“Definitely feeling good about grabbing points on the road,” coach Michele Nagamine messaged Spectrum News after the win. “Still sitting in second with a week off to recover…”

Cal State Fullerton (3-1-3 BWC) assumed the conference lead with 12 points in the standings thanks to a 1-0 win at UC San Diego on Sunday.

UH (10 points) could drop in the standings further this week because several teams, including Cal Poly, UC Davis, Long Beach State, UC San Diego and UC Riverside will catch up in games played.

Sam Tristan and Leslie Fregoso scored 42 seconds apart in the first half to give the Aggies a two-score lead. After Mitchell’s goal for UH, Davis’ Risa Yamada countered in the 52nd.
