HONOLULU — A home week that amounted to a Big West warmup went by in a blur for the Hawaii women’s volleyball team.

The Rainbow Wahine dispatched Cal State Northridge in 79 minutes on Sunday, 25-13, 25-14, 25-12, two days after sending Cal State Bakersfield packing in 90.

Coach Robyn Ah Mow was able to go to her bench extensively in both contests at the Stan Sheriff Center in ways that she was not during a competitive nonconference schedule. After 12 players saw action on Friday, 13 stepped on the floor Sunday.

While the starters set the tone on a season-best .402 hitting night for UH (9-4, 2-0 BWC), the reserves kept it up in their appearances as CSUN (2-11, 0-2) struggled to execute a basic Division I offense, hitting negative-.035.

Middle Amber Igiede was stellar with 13 kills and no errors on 18 swings. Paula Guersching recorded seven kills off the bench, her most since transferring to UH as the Horizon League Player of the Year at Youngstown State.

“Every team’s the same, you just gotta do your job, especially when you don’t know what’s happening on the other side,” said hitter Kendra Ham, who had six kills and five digs. “You just have to pick up those little things. There might be missed hits and stuff, tempo’s a little different and you just have to adjust to the game and still focus on your side.”

Added starting setter Kate Lang, who gave way to backup Jackie Matias for stretches, “I think this weekend just proved to ourselves that we are and can be a very low-error team if we are focused enough. I think coming into weekends like this, you have to treat it like every other game, and we did this week. I think we did a great job of being low-error and working hard and jelling throughout the games.”

UH committed just 10 errors and was not blocked by CSUN.

Things ramp up this week as UH heads to Long Beach State (7-5, 1-1) on Friday and UC San Diego (8-6, 0-2) on Saturday. LBSU opened the season by knocking off defending national champion Texas, though it lost three of its next four.
