When it turned, it turned in a hurry for the Hawaii women’s volleyball team.
A mid-match unraveling doomed the Rainbow Wahine to their third loss in four matches as they succumbed to host TCU, 25-27, 27-25, 25-15, 25-20, on the first day of the Fight in the Fort tournament in Fort Worth, Texas, on Thursday.
UH, playing for the first time ever at TCU but making an appearance in a tournament in Texas for the second straight season, got a career-high 21 kills and 10 digs from Caylen Alexander and 14 kills from middle Amber Igiede. But the unit was held to .170 hitting, due in large part to the huge block of the Horned Frogs. UH was outdone at the net by its widest margin of the season, 16.0-6.0.
Middle Brianna Green was in on 10 of the 16 blocks. Thirteen of them came in Sets 3 and 4 as the Frogs of the Big 12 Conference put the match away convincingly.
TCU (5-4) hit .269 behind a stellar effort from Melanie Parra, who put down 27 kills on 53 attempts with just three errors (.453).
UH (5-4) has struggled since earning its first ranking in four years on the heels of a two-match sweep of USC, with losses to Liberty, UCLA and now TCU (5-4). The Wahine will look to clear those struggles against Western Carolina (3-6) at 9 a.m. Hawaii time on Friday before they take on Florida State (5-4) on Saturday.
The Wahine, who rallied to take Set 1 in extra points on Alexander's seventh kill of the set, appeared well on their way to a 2-0 sets lead with a 24-20 advantage in Set 2. But the Horned Frogs turned back four straight set points and claimed seven of the last eight points of the frame to even the match 1-1.
It was a runaway from there. UH turned back four match points to make the final margin more respectable.
Backup hitter Kendra Ham got the start in place of freshman Tali Hakas as coach Robyn Ah Mow made the first starting lineup change of the season. Ham had eight kills against seven errors with 13 digs.
Setter Kate Lang, played close to her hometown of Keller, Texas, had 49 assists, eight digs and two blocks.
UH’s Friday and Saturday matches will not be televised or streamed.
