ESPN Honolulu on Monday officially announced the launch of a radio show featuring new Hawaii Athletic Director Craig Angelos.

The first show is Tuesday, from 6 to 7 p.m.

Kanoa Leahey, the Spectrum Sports play-by-by voice, will host the monthly show. The first edition is at Velocity Honolulu at 888 Kapiolani Blvd. The event is free and open to the public. “This will be my first dedicated regular radio show to talk exclusively about the UH athletic program and I am excited to partner with ESPN Honolulu on this monthly special event,” Angelos said in an ESPN Honolulu news release. “I want to get out in the community and hear directly from the UH fans, students, alumni, and ESPN Honolulu listeners, on what they’re excited or concerned about. This is such a great platform for our well-established audience and the fan base of UH sports fans.”

Angelos, who was hired in May to succeed David Matlin, has three decades of experience in athletics administration. He was associate athletic director at Long Island University when he was hired; his last head AD job was at Florida Atlantic.

While UH coaches in football, basketball and volleyball have regularly participated in “Call the Coach” shows on the KKEA, 1420-AM airwaves, a dedicated show for the athletic director has not been done — at least in the recent past.

“We’re thrilled to have Craig join us for this monthly program to talk about UH sports,” said Matt Apana, ESPN Honolulu’s general manager, in the release. “So many members of our community are die-hard UH fans and this regular event allows our listeners and UH fans across the state to get first-hand access to our new athletic director, ask questions, get to know him more personally, and hear his leadership philosophy, and vision for UH athletics.”

Shows are set for Sept. 12, Oct. 17, and Nov. 14. Additional shows with dates to be announced will take place monthly from December to May.

Angelos spoke to Spectrum News this week about some ideas UH plans to implement at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex for the upcoming 2023 UH football season.
