For the sixth time in 2023, the Hawaii baseball team gave up double-digit runs on Saturday. Fortunately for the Rainbow Warriors, it was also the fifth time they registered 10-plus themselves.

In a wild, back-and-forth game, UH out-slugged Cal State Fullerton 14-10 to even up a three-game Big West series at Goodwin Field in Fullerton, Calif., and snapped CSUF’s six-game winning streak.

The Rainbows (13-9, 3-2 BWC) can take the series with a win on Sunday. It could be another high-scoring affair with the teams’ bullpens depleted over the first two days. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. Hawaii time.

Harrison Bodendorf (2-1) picked up the win for the Rainbow Warriors with five innings of relief. When starter Randy Abshier was chased at the start of the fifth and Dalton Renne failed to record an out in relief, Bodendorf was summoned and tossed a season-high 99 pitches in going the rest of the way with four runs charged. He gave up six hits and two walks and fanned seven.

But the main story was the offense.

Center fielder Matt Wong reached base all six times he stepped to the plate, going 4-for-4 to match his career high in hits and adding a pair of walks. He drove in three and scored three runs.

Third baseman Kyson Donahue extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a 2-for-4 day. He was one of seven ‘Bows to have a multi-hit day as the team compiled a season-high 19 hits.

Wong and Aaron Ujimori each had a pair of doubles. Jacob Igawa was 3-for-6.

Fullerton (13-9, 6-2) surged ahead early, 3-0 and 4-2, but UH pulled even, then ahead by as many as six runs with 10 plated over the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, aided by two bases-loaded walks from the Titans.

After CSUF got within 12-8, catcher Dallas Duarte put down a successful squeeze bunt to score Igawa in the top of the ninth and Naighel Calderon doubled in Ujimori. The Titans got those two runs back in the bottom of the ninth, but Bodendorf finished them off.

A night after their walk-off victory over UH, the Titans had 14 hits but went through five pitchers.
