The only thing that could forestall another road sweep for the Hawaii men’s volleyball team on Friday was a truly deflating moment.
UH’s match at Cal State Northridge was stalled for a curious reason early in the second set when all the volleyballs in use at Premier Credit Union Arena were found to be under-inflated. It took several minutes to rectify the situation, but once it was sorted out the No. 2 Rainbow Warriors resumed punishment of the No. 14 Matadors and finished off a 25-22, 25-14, 25-18 decision in Northridge, Calif.
UH (19-2, 2-1 Big West) made it 6-for-6 in sweeps of its road matches this season heading into Saturday’s 4 p.m. Hawaii time rematch with CSUN (12-8, 1-2).
Hitter Chaz Galloway continued to pace the ‘Bows with a surge in his play to coincide with the conference season. He had 12 kills on .500 hitting as UH hit basically that percentage as a team for the entire match. The unit finished at a season-high .478.
The closest the match got was in Set 1, when CSUN went on a run to tie it at 20-all. But Galloway had two kills among three straight points for UH and Spyros Chakas closed it out with one of his nine kills on a Matador overpass on Galloway's serve.
UH won the blocks battle 10-4 as CSUN was held to .222 hitting. It was the seventh straight win in the series for the ‘Bows.
Kyle Hobus led the Matadors with 12 kills on .226 hitting. Griffin Walters was the host team’s most efficient high-usage player with 10 kills against just one error on 19 swings (.474).
