‘Eleu Choy is making it increasingly difficult for his coaches to take him off the court.
The top-ranked Hawaii men’s volleyball team, with Choy gaining steam as a worthy starting libero, dispatched visiting Concordia Irvine again Friday — this time via sweep, 25-20, 25-19 and 25-19 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Choy, a fourth-year sophomore out of Farrington High, dug a career-high 11 balls in anchoring the Rainbow Warriors’ defense with regular starting libero Brett Sheward filling in at setter for the second straight night.
UH (11-0) ran its winning streak to 20 matches dating back to last season, and 23 straight at home.
The ‘Bows dominated blocks 8-2 and hit .382 to the Golden Eagles’ .235. Spyros Chakas put down a match-high 14 kills, Chaz Galloway added 11 and Dimitrios Mouchlias 10.
Sheward had 36 assists and six digs.
The star of the night was the soft-spoken Choy, who energized the crowd of 4,078 (5,381 ticket issued) and continued to earn plaudits from head coach Charlie Wade. His previous high in digs were six. He also had two assists and was 18-for-18 on serve-receive.
He was seemingly everywhere laying out to keep points alive, causing CUI coach Riley Salmon to shake his head.
“Obviously Eleu’s a crowd favorite and they’re just getting the first chance to see the athleticism, the passion with which he plays,” Wade told Spectrum Sports’ Scott Robbs. “We were pretty active tonight in the backcourt.”
Regular starting setter Jakob Thelle watched the action from the sideline for consecutive nights. Wade said afterward he remains unconcerned about the All-American.
“Jakob’s available now. We’re just looking to be a little prudent with him and … looking to be our best at the end of the year,” he said.
CUI (4-7) was led by Uriel Batista, a native of Panama who helped the Eagles take a set of the 'Bows on Thursday night. He had had 10 kills on .172 hitting in the rematch.
The ‘Bows continue nonconference play at home next week against Long Island (5-4) in a two-match set Wednesday and Friday.
Also Friday night, middle Guilherme Voss stopped by the Spectrum Sports Corner Crew postgame after putting down five kills on eight errorless swings.
