The location changed and so did the method of success, but the men’s volleyball end result remained the same for top-ranked Hawaii and No. 8 Stanford on Saturday.

UH achieved sweeps of the Cardinal on consecutive days, this time 27-25, 25-19, 25-19 in front of a pro-Hawaii crowd of about 1,300 at a packed Burnham Pavilion in Stanford, Calif.

The Rainbow Warriors (9-0) had gotten by without a dominant block for most of the 2023 season to this point. But it became a real weapon on Saturday as UH racked up a season-high 12.5 to Stanford’s six. Cole Hogland, Chaz Galloway and Guilherme Voss each had a solo stuff and those three plus Dimitrios Mouchlias were in on four or more block assists.

The opposite Mouchlias paced the ‘Bows offensively with 17 kills and just two errors on 29 swings, hitting .517, helping make up for a quiet, six-kill, four-error night by season leader Spyros Chakas.

UH hit .333 as a team to Stanford’s .258. Will Rottman led the Cardinal (7-4) with 13 kills on .320 hitting before leaving in the third set with an apparent injury.

UH was tested in the first frame; it fell behind 21-18, rallied, then faced a Stanford set point after failing to convert two of their own. Finally, the ‘Bows claimed it with two kills by Hogland plus a block of Rottman.

The Rainbow Warriors extended their sets won streak to 24, having last dropped one against Ball State in the second match of the season on Jan. 13.

UH returns for an 11-game homestand, first with a pair against Concordia-Irvine (9-3) on Thursday and Friday. Those will be its first matches at the Stan Sheriff Center in nearly a month.
