HONOLULU — Hawaii baseball coach Rich Hill will see more than a few familiar faces in the second week of the 2023 season.
That’s when the Rainbow Warriors travel to San Diego for the Tony Gwynn Legacy tournament, the second straight year UH will participate. But unlike last season, this time UH will see Hill’s former school, the University of San Diego, on Feb. 24.
Hill, who spent 23 years at USD, coached the Toreros to nine NCAA tournament appearances and seven West Coast Conference championships before leaving for UH.
UH announced its full 50-game schedule on Monday, with 26 of them at Les Murakami Stadium. It opens with a four-game home series against defending Horizon League champion Wright State on Feb. 17.
Besides the Tony Gwynn Legacy, which besides UH and USD features UNLV and San Diego State on Feb. 25 and 26, UH will appear in the Cambria College Classic March 3-5 in Minneapolis, Minn., and face Big Ten competition like Minnesota, Nebraska and Maryland.
UH’s marquee home series of the season is Connecticut over four days, March 10-13. The Huskies reached an NCAA super regional last season.
Big West Conference play begins March 17 at Cal Poly. The Big West home opener is April 6 against Cal State Bakersfield.
The other Big West home series are UC San Diego (April 14-16), Long Beach State (April 21-23), UC Davis (May 11-14), and defending champion UC Santa Barbara (May 26-28) on the last weekend of the regular season.
On the road, UH has Cal Poly (March 17-19), Cal State Fullerton (March 31-April 2), UC Riverside (April 28-30), UC Irvine (May 5-7), and Cal State Northridge (May 19-21).
UH, 28-24 and 19-11 in the Big West a year ago, is looking to build on its first season with a winning BWC record.
