The Hawaii women’s basketball team called in its reserves to help it pick up its first win of the 2022-23 season.

Behind a 7-for-7 shooting, 17-point performance from backup forward Jacque David, the UH second unit accounted for more than half the team’s points in a 63-47 win over Grambling State in the Rainbow Wahine Showdown at SimpliFi Arena on Friday afternoon.

The Wahine reserves outscored their Tigers counterparts 32-7. David, a 5-foot-11 sophomore from Independence, Mo., surpassed her career best of 11 points at UC Santa Barbara last season. She sank both of her 3-point attempts and lone free-throw attempt.

Center Kallin Spiller added 10 points and 10 rebounds and forward Daejah Phillips had 15 points and seven assists.

Center Imani Perez and guard Meilani McBee each scored six off the bench to help make up for a combined 2-for-14 shooting outing from the starting backcourt of Lily Wahinekapu and Kelsie Imai.

UH (1-4) won the second quarter 19-11 to take a double-digit lead into halftime and went on to avoid its first 0-5 start since 2008-09. Getting the win over the SWAC team was vital, as UH faces daunting challenges the next two days. Grambling dropped to 1-5.

UH resumes the tournament at 2:30 p.m. Saturday against Florida Gulf Coast (4-1), a 3-point happy team that already beat the Wahine 65-45 on Nov. 18.

Then, UH caps the four-team tournament against No. 2 Stanford (6-1) at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Stanford routed FGCU 93-69 on Friday.

Colbi Maples led the Tigers with 17 points on 7-for-12 shooting.
