It wasn’t necessarily pretty, but the Hawaii women’s volleyball team made quick work of UC Riverside on Thursday night at SRC Arena in Riverside, Calif.
Despite committing nearly as many hitting errors as their last-place opponent, the Rainbow Wahine maintained their sole standing atop the Big West Conference standings with a 25-21, 25-15, 25-15 sweep of the Highlanders.
After achieving a home-and-home season sweep of UCR (4-17, 2-10 BWC), UH (13-6, 10-1) now has a travel day to get to Northern California for Saturday’s 4 p.m. matchup at UC Davis (9-12, 4-7).
Hitter Braelyn Akana had a career night Thursday with 10 kills and one error on 13 swings for .692 hitting, helping make up for quiet nights from Riley Wagoner (eight kills, .100 hitting) and Caylen Alexander (five kills, .083).
Middle Amber Igiede was her typically efficient self with 11 kills and just one error on 20 swings (.500 hitting) with eight blocks as UH out-blocked UCR 10-4. Akana was in on three stuffs.
The Wahine hit .216 as a team to the Highlanders’ .074.
UH had six aces, including three by Wagoner. Wagoner (13), setter Kate Lang (12) and libero Tayli Ikenaga (10) recorded double-digit dig games.
The visiting Wahine jumped out to a 10-2 lead in Set 1, only to see the Highlanders rally to tie it up at 19 before Akana and Wagoner helped secure it with a pair of kills apiece. Sets 2 and 3 were runaways, allowing coach Robyn Ah Mow to empty her bench.
UH has won 30 straight sets in the series with UCR, which got a team-high seven kills against seven errors from Isabella Scarlett.
