HONOLULU — In the last 15 years, Oahu Interscholastic Association girls volleyball has been dominated by three schools: Kahuku, Mililani and Moanalua.

Kapolei has been eager to join the club in recent years and showed it again Thursday night in the OIA quarterfinals. The Hurricanes stunned Moanalua in an epic five-setter, 15-25, 25-21, 29-31, 25-22, 18-16 at Mililani.

Malinah Purcell-Telefoni led the way with 15 kills for the Hurricanes as the OIA West’s third seed clinched a state berth and will meet West top seed Mililani in the semifinals at 7:30 p.m. on Monday at Moanalua.

Kapolei (10-2) rallied from a 2-1 sets deficit to take a six-point lead in the fifth and final frame, only to see Moanalua (9-2) make a last stand behind hitter Kamaluhia Garcia, who had 28 kills and 15 digs. Na Menehune attained match point, but the Hurricanes had just enough in the tank to stave it off and win it in extra points.

It was the first time in the split of Division I and II divisions in the OIA (since 2005) that Moanalua was knocked out before the league semifinals. Kapolei seeks its first Division I OIA title; it won Division II in 2008.

In the other OIA Division I quarterfinals Thursday, Mililani defeated Kalani in four frames after dropping the first set; East top seed Kahuku, the defending OIA champ, swept Waianae; and Farrington defeated Leilehua in four sets.

Kahuku and Farrington meet in the first Division I semifinal at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Moanalua. The four losing quarterfinal teams will battle it out for two remaining OIA berths to states.

Kailua and Waialua will meet for the OIA Division II championship at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, also at Moanalua, followed by the Division I final.
