HOUSTON — Hawaii native Jocelyn Alo tied the NCAA softball career home run record on Sunday with her 95th blast in Oklahoma’s 8-0 win over Texas State in the Houston Classic.
The reigning USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year launched her seventh blast of the season on the second pitch she saw in her first at-bat. It tied her with Sooners alumna Lauren Chamberlain.
It came a day after Alo, from Hauula, hit four homers in two mercy-rule wins over McNeese State and tournament host Houston. The fifth-year senior tied the mark in 215 career games, fewer than anyone else in the NCAA career top 10, according to OU.
She also broke Chamberlain's Sooner record for career RBIs (254) with her home run; she has 256 and counting.
"It was pretty crazy," Alo said, according to a release by OU athletics. "Coach (Patty Gasso) calmed me down through the whole process. This was a hard thing to do, but I'm just trying to enjoy every moment that happens. It's even sweeter when I get to hug my family after. My family got to be here to experience it, so it was pretty cool.
"Hopefully next weekend, if it happens my mom will be there as well and my grandparents and it'll be even more special."
Alo will get her next chance to break the record against Cal State Fullerton on Friday in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, Calif.
Top-ranked and defending national champion Oklahoma is scheduled to travel to Hawaii for the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic on March 10-12 at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Host UH has dates against OU on the last two days of the tournament.
