A partnership between Kauai County and the Kauai Housing Development Corporation saw the first sales completed for single-family homes at Lima Ola Workforce Housing Development, the county’s master planned community.
Four families moved into homes in February.
Lima Ola’s 550 new affordable housing units are made up of single-family homes and multi-family rental units.
In the next 18 months, the first phase of 38 homes will be developed with more two- and three-bedroom homes becoming available later in the year.
“Housing is among our top priorities for our administration and community, especially for our residents on west Kauai,” said Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami in a release. “Mahalo to the combined efforts of the Housing Agency, KHDC, and all our partners for making the dream of having a home in ‘Ele‘ele a reality for our local families.”
Lima Ola is the county’s largest affordable housing project and owning a home depends on the buyer fulfilling the county’s Homebuyer Program requirements.
“Mahalo to Shioi Construction, the Kauai Housing Agency, architect Marc Ventura, Kauai Realty, Esaki Surveying, Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg, and Esaki Surveying for working with us to provide support to the first phase and onward,” said KHDC Executive Director Andy Friend. “This milestone brings relief and joy for families who have been waiting a long time for a home.”
