As the theft rate rises in fire-impacted areas of Lahaina, Maui County is taking action by installing security cameras in key, high-risk locations to deter criminal activity and support law enforcement.
“Our community has endured unimaginable loss, and we will not allow perpetrators to exploit this tragedy,” said Mayor Richard Bissen in a release. “We hear you, we care, and we are taking action. The rise in thefts is unacceptable, and these cameras are part of our commitment to keeping Lahaina safe as we rebuild together.”
Lahaina residents and property owners have been frustrated by ongoing thefts and called for more protections.
Working closely with law enforcement and community leaders, county officials are implementing the cameras while respecting the privacy of residents. They say it’s a temporary measure to address immediate security concerns until neighborhoods are rebuilt and permanent community infrastructure has been restored.
The county has been collaborating with Hawaiian Electric Company to restore streetlights in many areas and are working to restore lights in remaining locations as soon as possible.
People can report suspicious activity or theft to the Maui Police Department at 808-244-6400.
