The Hawaii Department of Law Enforcement is warning Hawaii residents about a recurring scam in which a caller impersonates a sheriff.
In recent weeks, DLE said several people have reported receiving calls from scammers claiming to be deputy sheriffs, who tell them they have outstanding warrants because they failed to appear in court. According to DLE, similar scam calls happened around this time last year.
The state agency urged people not to provide credit card numbers, bank account information or other personal information to people claiming to represent a law enforcement agency via phone, text or email. They also advised people not to communicate with unsolicited email or phone text senders, and to never open attachments or links sent by text from unknown individuals.
The DLE asks anyone who receives a call, text or email matching this scam to alert the Criminal Investigation Division by calling 808-587-5050.
