Full park closures throughout March and April are on tap for Diamond Head State Monument due to a construction project, according to the Department of Land and Natural Resources.

The project entails stabilizing loose rocks around the Kahala Tunnel so the closures are needed to keep visitors and staff safe.

Full park closures are scheduled for March 4-7 and 11-14; April 1-4, 8-11 and 14-17.

During the full closures, no visitors will be allowed entry and employees will need to access the crater via the Kapahulu Tunnel between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. A security guard will be stationed at the entry gate leading to the tunnel during the closures.

The park will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. during Spring Break (March 17-28) with work being done 6:30 p.m. to 2 a.m.

During these hours, a guard will be at the entry gate and employees will use the Kapahulu Tunnel.

The park will close at 2 p.m. on the following dates: March 3, 10 and 31, and April 7, 14 and 18.

“The safety of our visitors and employees is our top priority,” said Curt Cottrell, administrator of the DLNR Division of State Parks, in a release. “While the closures may cause some inconvenience, the rockfall mitigation work is critical to maintaining a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone who visits Diamond Head State Monument.”

The project began January 6 and will last through July.
