As severe weather moves down the Hawaiian Island chain, its effects are being felt around Oahu.
The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Enterprise Services announced the closure of Honolulu Zoo due to heavy rains that have flooded walkways and caused ponding. The zoo is expected to remain closed throughout Thursday.
Play at the city’s six municipal golf courses has been suspended due to heavy rains and strong winds.
The city’s Department of Parks and Recreation announced park and garden closures and the suspension of regularly scheduled activities.
Closed parks and gardens include Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, Koko Crater Botanical Garden, Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden, Wahiawa Botanical Garden, Koko Crater Botanical Garden, Patsy. T Mink Central Oahu Regional Park, and Hans L’Orange Neighborhood Park. While not all parks and gardens are closed, please use extreme caution when outdoors.
DPR has also suspended permitted camping at all 17 DPR campgrounds for Friday when the agency will assess whether conditions will allow for weekend camping. Campgrounds are regularly closed for camping on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Check the camping website for the latest information.
DPR pool managers will close their pools if thunder or lightning are seen or if heavy rains impact visibility.
Oahu is currently under a Flash Flood Warning and High Wind Warning, in addition to a Severe Thunderstorm Warning from 5:41 p.m. to 6:26 p.m. Thursday. Residents are advised to exercise extreme caution when outdoors.
