On Monday Kauai Bus announced the launch of its new digital fare payment system available through the “world’s largest mobile ticketing provider,” Masabi, that delivers “Fare Payments-as-a-Service” via its open Justride platform.
According to a Kauai County news release, bus riders will be able to purchase single-ride tickets and day, monthly and annual passes directly through their mobile device at any time. Riders will also be able to manage their “Stored Value Accounts” or personal information through the app or on an online portal so that adding funds and purchasing fares are convenient.
Onboard ticket validators provided by the company have been installed in all buses, providing riders with fast and easy boarding and reduced “dwell” times to enhance the overall transit experience.
“Our team has always sought ways to modernize antiquated government processes, and this new development from the Kauai Bus does exactly that,” said Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami in the release. “This new mobile ticketing app makes it easier than ever for residents and visitors to ride the Kauai Bus.”
Transportation Agency Executive Celia Mahikoa said, “Bringing convenience and efficiency to our riders has always been a top priority of our mayor and his administration. This new mobile ticketing system is a first step forward in transforming the way we provide an accessible and reliable service to riders. Whether you're commuting to work, running errands, or exploring Kauai, everyone can now enjoy a faster, more modern way to travel.”
Partnering with Masabi is the first part of a phased approach to modernizing fare payments across the Kauai Bus network, according to the county. Future plans include the introduction of account-based ticketing and open payments, enabling riders to benefit from fare capping for more equitable pricing and the flexibility to pay using smartcards, contactless bank cards or mobile wallets. The reasoning behind the modernization is to simplify payments, enhance accessibility and ensure riders pay the best fare for their journey.
“Mobile ticketing is a cornerstone of modernizing public transit and creating a better rider experience,” said Brian Zanghi, CEO of Masabi. “We are thrilled to collaborate with the County of Kauai to bring this innovative solution to the island’s transit system. Together, we are not only improving the travel experience for passengers but also helping to build a more efficient and sustainable public transportation network.”
Riders who may prefer to continue paying with cash will be able to do so.
