Christmas Day and New Year’s Day are the only two holidays observed by Honolulu’s Department of Environmental Services' refuse employees.

To that end, ENV reminds the public that there will be no trash collection on Wednesday, Dec. 25 and Wednesday Jan. 1.

What You Need To Know

  • There will be no trash collection on Christmas Day or New Year's Day

  • Communities with a three-cart collection system can leave their gray cart out if the regular refuse collection day falls on Christmas or New Year's Day

  • If mixed recyclables or green waste collection falls on those holidays, blue and green carts should be held back until their next scheduled collection day

  • Communities with twice-a-week manual refuse collection whose collection falls on those holidays should hold their items until the next pickup date

For those communities that use a three-cart collection system (once-a-week refuse and once-a-week recycling pickup), if the refuse collection day (gray cart) falls on these holidays, residents are asked to leave their gray carts curbside until they are serviced.

For those communities that use a three-cart collection system (once-a-week refuse and once-a-week recycling pickup), if the mixed recyclables (blue cart) or the green waste (green cart) collection falls on these holidays, residents are asked to hold these carts until the next scheduled pickup date.

Residents on twice-a-week manual refuse collection should hold their items until the next scheduled pickup date.

Bulky item collection is by appointment only and will not be scheduled on those two holidays. Please see envhonolulu.org or call 808-768-3200 (Option 0) to schedule an appointment.

All convenience centers, transfer stations, H-POWER and Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. These facilities will reopen on Dec. 26 and Jan. 2, respectively.
