According to the Hawaian Volcano Observatory, a magnitude 3.7 earthquake occurred near Hana, Maui, 8:44 p.m. Thursday at 6.2 miles below sea level. The earthquake had no apparent impact on either Mauna Loa or Kīlauea volcanoes.
The earthquake was felt across Maui, Hawaii Island and Moloka‘i. These earthquakes, which are uncommon but have occurred on occasion, are caused by the bending of the Earth's crust beneath the islands and associated adjustments related to the weight of the islands, per HVO.
HVO will continue to monitor the situation.
