Phase 5 of upgrades to the Kalapawai roundabout are done and Phase 6 begins today, Monday, according to the city’s Department of Transportation Services and Department of Facilities Maintenance.
The roundabout is located at the intersection of Kalaheo Avenue and Kailua Road fronting Kalapawai Market.
Phase 6 of the 9-phase project will include a road closure on the mauka-bound lane of Kailua Road in front of Kalapawai Market. Completion is scheduled for the end of January 2025, barring any unforeseen conditions. Completion of the entire project is scheduled for the summer of 2025.
Motorists going through the area are advised to allow for extra time and to expect congestion during construction hours. They are asked to be patient and cautious while in the area.
The project is federally funded and improvements include an upgraded roundabout with higher-quality materials, new sidewalks, raised pedestrian crossings and new drainage infrastructure such as permeable pavements, trench drains and pre-treatment tanks and rain gardens to address frequent storm water ponding.
