The first phase of Waikiki’s new transit-priority lane on Kuhio Avenue is completed, announced the city’s Department of Transportation Services and Honolulu Complete Streets on Friday.

What You Need To Know

  • The westbound transit-priority lane gives priority to buses, large trucks and bicycles and stretches from Kapahulu Avenue to Launiu Street

  • The transit-priority lane allows vehicles to enter when making right turns into side streets or driveways

  • Honolulu Police Department officers will be warning and educating drivers that misuse the transit-priority lane throughout December

The westbound transit-priority lane gives priority to buses, large trucks and bicycles and stretches from Kapahulu Avenue to Launiu Street. It builds on the success of the King Street bus lane that reduced bus travel times by up to 30%.

DTS estimates 56% of travelers utilizing Kuhio Avenue during rush hour are walking, biking or riding public or private buses; 44% are traveling by car.

The transit-priority lane allows vehicles to enter when making right turns into side streets or driveways, balancing the needs of all road users while prioritizing transit vehicles to create an efficient transportation network in Waikiki.

Loading of passengers is prohibited in the lane while permitted freight loading will be allowed from 10 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.

Honolulu Police Department officers will be warning and educating drivers that misuse the transit-priority lane throughout December.

According to DTS, the city has worked extensively with Waikiki organizations and the community since 2021 to ensure support and input. Outreach efforts have included presentations to the Waikiki Neighborhood Board, Waikiki Transportation Management Association, Hawaii Tourism Authority and other organizations, in addition to direct communication with businesses, property owners and residents.

The project aligns with the Waikiki Special District’s multimodal transportation goals, which emphasize efficient and sustainable transit options for workers, businesses, residents, and tourists.

Phase 2 of the project will add bus lanes on Kuhio Avenue between Kaiulani Street and Kapahulu Avenue in the eastbound direction. For more information on the project, visit the Honolulu Complete Streets website.
