In response to a Red Flag Warning issued by the National Weather Service in Honolulu, Gov. Josh Green on Wednesday signed an Emergency Proclamation that is in effect through Friday for wind and low relative humidity in the leeward areas of all islands. It may be terminated or superseded if or when conditions change.

The governor’s proclamation will enable the quick deployment of resources to mitigate risks caused by current weather conditions. It also advises the public to avoid any actions that could create unnecessary danger to the community.

The NWS’s Red Flag Warning means weather conditions could rapidly start and spread wildfires. Therefore the public is urged to avoid actions that could spark a fire such as having open flames, campfires and outdoor grilling.

Know that power tools can also produce sparks, as well as idling or parking vehicles on dry grass, which should also be avoided. Residents should check with county authorities for any bans or restrictions related to the above activities.

Late afternoon on Wednesday, the Hawaii Department of Health declared a “No Burn” period for Kauai County through noon on Friday that prohibits any open burning, including permitted agricultural burning.

Officials encourage residents to stay vigilant and informed by monitoring local news media and county emergency management agencies for any information on high-risk areas in their communities.

The proclamation also suspends laws that might delay the execution of emergency functions.
