As part of its commitment to reduce plastic waste, Sensei Farms partners with Papahānaumokuākea Marine Debris Project to mark Giving Tuesday on Dec 3.
PMDP is newly featured on Sensei Farms’ paperboard packaging that launched earlier this year, highlighting the nonprofit’s ongoing efforts to remove plastic and marine debris from the oceans.
Eleven million metric tons of plastics enter the ocean each year, adding to the estimated 200 million metric tons of plastics already circulating in the ocean, according to a release. The debris severely threatens endangered marine species such as the Hawaiian monk seal and Hawaiian green sea turtle.
Although only seven of the 137 islands in the Hawaiian archipelago are populated, plastic waste affects all of them.
PMDP has been operating for just four years and has removed 1,046,457 pounds of marine debris on 10 large-scale 30-day missions to Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument.
“We are partnering with PMDP because they are doing important work to address Hawaii’s plastic pollution beyond our major islands,” said Connie Lu, Marketing Director of Hawaii and Corporate Sustainability, in the release. “Tackling plastic waste will require a holistic approach, which is why we are proud to be both reducing plastics at the source and supporting efforts to remove existing plastics from the environment.”
Consumers will find Sensei Farms’ products featuring PMDP in stores on this Giving Tuesday and throughout the holidays. Stores include Foodland, KTA, Whole Foods, Target, Safeway, Don Quijote, Down to Earth, HMart and other local Hawaii grocers.
