The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Design and Construction will present an overview of planned improvements along Kamehameha Highway in Haleiwa town and invites the public to attend a community meeting on Dec. 11.

The meeting will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Waialua Elementary School cafeteria at 67-020 Waialua Beach Road in Waialua.

DDC will update residents and businesses on the project that will “enhance pedestrian connectivity and promote an active pedestrian-oriented commercial street frontage,” accord to a news release.

In addition, the project will mitigate stormwater ponding along the highway between Opaeula Bridge (Twin Bridges) and Anahulu River Bridge

Improvements will include repaving the roadway; paving the shoulders with permeable concrete pavers, concrete or asphalt (depending on site conditions); and installing raised concrete curbs between the road and shoulders, a sub-drainage system, and underground stormwater storage tanks.

Originally conceived of as the Haleiwa Town Improvement District Project, which would have required financial participation from abutting property owners, the project has been scaled down following community input. The city’s Capital Improvement Program will now fund the improvements as a street rehabilitation project.

Project information is available on the Honolulu Complete Streets website.

Anyone who requires special assistance, auxiliary aid and/or service such as sign language interpreter, language interpreter or wheelchair accessibility to take part in the meeting can contact Jim Niemann at 808-842-1133 or email jimn@rmtowill.com at least five days prior to the meeting.
