Kauai County’s Public Works Solid Waste Division announced they expect Kauai residents will experience delays with trash collections through early 2025.

The reason behind the delays is the longer haul times of residential trash to the Kekaha Landfill, according to a release. Because the Kapaa Refuse Transfer Station is undergoing renovation and the Lihue RTS is still under construction, trash trucks need to offload at the landfill instead of the refuse transfer stations.

“Although refuse pickup could be delayed or occur at different times than usual, residential refuse collections will take place on the regularly scheduled days. Customers are advised to leave their trash out,” said Solid Waste Division Chief Allison Fraley in the release. “We thank the public for their understanding and cooperation.”

Trash must be put out the night before collection or by 4:30 a.m. the day of to ensure it is collected. If trash is not set out during this period, officials say residents will be asked to bring their refuse to the nearest refuse transfer station for disposal.

Officials also advise the following:

  • The cart must not overflow; the lid must be fully closed before pick up
  • Trash must be bagged before being placed in the cart
  • Place trash only in your assigned refuse cart
  • Only trash in the cart will be picked up
  • Place only dry trash in refuse carts; liquids must be drained or absorbed before being placed in carts
  • Place carts at least 5 feet away from any object with at least 16 feet of clearance above
  • When carts are placed in a row, there must be at least 3 feet between them
  • Refuse carts should be removed as soon as possible after trash has been collected

If trash has not been picked up by the end of the day, call 808-241-4841 or email solidwaste@kauai.gov.
