The Kauai Police Department warns residents of a scam in which callers are impersonating KPD officers and demanding immediate payment via PayPal from the victim to avoid arrest, according to a release.
In the scam, the fraudsters claim they have a warrant for the victim’s arrest because of a missed jury duty or unpaid fines. They pressure victims to pay a hefty fine via PayPal in order to avoid being arrested.
Scammers can manipulate caller ID to make the calls appear legitimate and may use real names or actual court addresses.
Kauai police, however, will never request payment through PayPal or any other online platform.
KPD offer residents tips to avoid becoming a victim:
- KPD will never request payment via PayPal for fines or legal matters.
- All official communication will be sent by mail, not over the phone.
- Verify callers. If in doubt of the caller, hang up and contact KPD directly at 808-241-1711.
- Always be cautious of high-pressure tactics and urgent requests for payment.
Officials encourage residents to report any suspicious calls or messages to KPD Dispatch at 808-241-1711.
