Closed since Sept. 11 to address water quality standards and stormwater discharges, the Lihue Refuse Transfer Station will reopen on Nov. 2, according to Kauai County’s Public Works Solid Waste Division.

Because of ongoing construction and an anticipated an influx of waste into the Lihue RTS when it reopens, officials are temporarily modifying items that will be accepted:

• Construction and demolition debris such as drywall, wood waste, tile, roofing material, fiberglass shower stalls and tubs, plumbing pipes and carpet rolls will not be accepted.

• Pallets must be cut in quarters.

• Trailers containing trash will not be accepted.

Officials recommend bagging all trash to prevent windblown litter and cutting long items into three-foot lengths. Items not accepted can be hauled by a waste hauler or transported to Kekaha Landfill.

In addition, the Kapaa Refuse Transfer Station will close for renovations for an estimated nine months starting Nov. 2. Kapaa Roads Baseyard on Kahau Road will accept bagged trash from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Individuals can call 808-241-4841 or email solidwaste@kauai.gov with any questions.
