KAILUA, Hawaii — Honolulu Ocean Safety rescued an 18-year-old kiteboarder who crashed into Popoia Island (Flat Island) off Kailua on Tuesday around 5 p.m.
After receiving a 911 call, a lifeguard rescue ski launched and within minutes secured the injured kiteboarder and brought him to shore.
Once on shore, lifeguards began medical treatment for the injured kiteboarder, who suffered a possible back injury and lacerations to his legs.
When Honolulu Emergency Medical Services arrived, they took over with advanced life support and transported the 18-year-old kiteboarder to a trauma center in serious condition.
Ocean conditions were very windy and choppy.
Lifeguards retrieved the man’s kiteboard about 400 yards down the beach.
