LIHUE, Hawaii — Kauai County Elections Division officials announced ballot packets for the 2024 General Election were mailed to residents on Tuesday.

They reminded voters who used to receive mail via a PO Box at the now closed Kealia Post Office to re-register to vote with a new mailing address. Unlike regular mail, the United States Postal Service cannot forward a ballot packet to a voter’s new mailing address even if a voter completed a USPS forwarding order.

Voters who re-register after Oct. 15 will be sent a ballot in a later mailing.

Officials advised residents who receive a ballot packet for someone no longer living at the address to write, “NOT AT THIS ADDRESS,” and place it back in the USPS mail. The returned ballot will be used to flag the voter’s registration record and help identify outdated records in the voter file.

Ballot drop boxes for the 2024 General Election will be deployed on Oct. 17 and 18 at the following locations:

Oct. 17:

  • Koloa Neighborhood Center, 3461 Weliweli Road
  • Kalaheo Neighborhood Center, 4480 Papalina Road
  • Hanapepe Neighborhood Center, 4451 Puolo Road
  • Waimea Neighborhood Center, 4556 Makeke Road
  • Elections Division, 4386 Rice Street

Oct. 18:

  • Hanalei Neighborhood Center, 5-5358 Kuhio Highway
  • Church of the Pacific, 4520 Kapaka Road
  • Aloha Petroleum Menehune Food Mart, 4521 Kolo Road
  • Kapaa Public Library, 1464 Kuhio Highway

Registered voters can access the drop boxes 24/7 until 7 p.m. on General Election Day on Nov. 5. Ballots must be received — not postmarked — by 7 p.m. on Nov. 5 in order to be processed.

To register to vote and for accessible in-person voting, the Voter Service Center is located at the Historic County Annex Building, 4386 Rice Street in Lihue. Hours of operation: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from Oct. 22 to Nov. 4, and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Nov. 5. Residents can also register online.

Election officials recommend mailing in completed ballots by Oct. 28 or dropping it into a designated ballot drop box after the date.
