LAHAINA, Hawaii — The Lahaina Aquatic Center, which was closed following the Aug. 8, 2023, wildfire, reopened on Saturday after a major cleanup and the installation of a new chlorine system.

The public swimming pool, located mauka of Honoapiilani Highway and next to the West Maui Skate Park, did not sustain structural damage during the fire. However, it was within the Lahaina Impact Zone and was without electricity and water for months.

During the closure, crews undertook a large-scale cleanup of debris and ash from the County of Maui facility.

The nonprofit Red Lightning coordinated the cleanup and said nearly 100 volunteers helped clean the accumulation of ash from the pool and repaint the facility.

County Department of Parks and Recreation employees checked equipment to ensure it was safe and operable, tested water quality, and installed a new chlorine system.

“We appreciate the assistance of so many hands in helping us to reopen this important facility for our West Maui community,” said Department of Parks and Recreation Deputy Director Shane Dudoit in a statement. “This pool is an important part of the daily activities of so many of our residents of all ages.”

On Aug. 1, 2024, Maui County reopened Honoapiilani Highway, which provided access to the pool.
