After reopening Haena Beach Park on Sunday after an all clear from Kauai Ocean Safety Bureau officials following Saturday’s closure, Haena Beach Park, in addition to Makua Beach (also known as Tunnels), were closed Monday afternoon due to a shark sighting.

A tiger shark, approximately 10 feet in length, was seen in waters off Haena. Officials have not said whether it’s the same shark that closed the beach on Saturday.

Beachgoers are warned to stay out of the water and as a safety precaution, warning signs have been posted and the area will be monitored.

Lifeguards will reassess the situation on Tuesday and reopen the beach at noon if there are no other sightings.

Ocean Safety Bureau officials reconvened at Haena Beach Park on Sunday following a shark sighting on Saturday afternoon. Since no sharks were observed in the waters, warning signs were taken down and the beach has reopened to the public.

As of Saturday afternoon, Ocean Safety Bureau officials are advising the public to stay out of the water at Haena Beach Park until further notice due to a possible 8- to 10-foot shark sighted roughly 50 feet from shore.

Officials have posted warning signs and are monitoring the area as a safety precaution.

Lifeguards will reassess the area on Sunday, Oct. 6. Updates will be provided when more information is available.
