The Kauai Fire Department said Thursday that after working with private landowners they had extinguished a brush fire on a ridge above Wainiha Powerhouse Road in the Hanalei area that burned through 20 acres.

The fire was first reported Wednesday at 8:35 p.m.

Because of the terrain, the fire was initially inaccessible to firefighters. On Wednesday night, firefighters monitored the fire, setting up a command post at Camp Naue.

On Thursday morning, Engine 1 and Rescue 3 crews used UTVs to reach the top of the ridge, where the head of the fire was located. Working in coordination with crews on the ridge, Air 1, Air 2, and a Jack Harter helicopter dropped water on the fire throughout the day. Fire crews atop the mountain and private landowners continued to extinguish hot spots until 11 p.m. Thursday.

Officials received reports of smoke entering nearby homes, but the fire was not a threat to the homes.

No injuries were reported.

Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire.
